Why AI?
Customers are asking AI where to buy flowers. Flower shops need a clear answer waiting for them.
A customer used to search and scroll through a page of results. More and more, they ask an AI assistant, and it answers with a name or two. That answer is only as good as what the web says. Today much of what the web says loudest about flowers comes from wire services, marketplaces and big sellers, not from the flower shop down the street.
Nobody knows exactly how AI assistants will choose what to recommend next year. What we can see today is that they repeat what is said clearly, consistently and in many places, and they favor plain answers to the question the customer asked. A shop that looks like every other listing is hard to recommend. A shop that meets a standard, sits on a trusted list and carries a mark customers recognize is easier.
That is the job of I Speak Flowers™, from the World Cut Flower Commission (WCFC). It gives flower shops something no single shop can build alone: a standard written by florists, a free worldwide list of the shops that meet it, and a free decal for the door. One clear answer, said the same way everywhere, to the question "where is a real flower shop near me?"
Before an assistant can point anyone to a real flower shop, the trade has to agree on what a flower shop is. That is the standard. Florists write it. Every shop that meets it is listed free and gets a free decal, member or not, and nobody can pay for a better spot on the list.
The same idea runs up the chain. Growers, wholesalers and importers can carry I Speak Flowers™ on their boxes and trucks, never on a shop window. The aim is for grower and variety names to travel with the flowers, so the information stays accurate from the farm to the counter.
And that's exactly the point: AI can't work when every link in the chain uses different names and varieties for the same flowers. A shared, standardized language for what we grow, move, and sell is the foundation that lets the intelligence flow at all.
Associations such as the Society of American Florists represent the whole industry — growers, importers, wholesalers, supermarket floral departments and florists — and their marketing promotes flowers for everyone who sells them. Groups around the world, such as WAFA and FLORINT, have given florists and designers a voice. We respect all of them.
I Speak Flowers™ does one narrower job: it marks the flower shop itself. When a customer, or an assistant answering for one, asks where to find a real florist, there should be a clear answer.
This website is dedicated to only the beginning. The vision is much bigger. We invite you to be part of it from day one.
The floral industry talks a lot about artificial intelligence. Trade publications mention it. Associations reference it. Platforms claim it. But here is the honest reality: most of what is being called "AI" in this industry is simply Google — and on Google, flowers compete for attention against sugar and diamonds. That is not artificial intelligence working for floriculture. That is a search engine indifferent to it.
The industry does not yet know what to do with AI. And that is not a criticism — it is an opportunity. One flower shop cannot keep up with it alone, and should not have to. That is what the marketing team behind I Speak Flowers™ is for: search, social media and AI, working for member shops so florists can get back to designing. The Cut Flower App comes later, as a tool for the people who work in flower shops.
Tell us where your shop is. We'll confirm your listing and let you know when an I Speak Flowers™ meeting is near you.
